TRAVANCORE STATE CONGRESS
On February 23, 1938 a new organization called the Travancore State Congress
was born at a meeting of prominent leaders, about nine in number, held in the office
room of A. Narayana Pillai, the lawyer, in the Rashtriya Hotel, Thiruvananthapuram
under the chairmanship of C.V. Kunjuraman. Pattom Thanu Pillai was elected the
President and P.S. Nataraja Pillai the Secretary of the new organization. Its aim was the
achievement of Responsible Government on the basis of adult franchise and protection
of the rights of minorities through just and peaceful means. Thus the stage was set for a
new chapter in the political history of modern Travancore. On July 4, 1938, the leaders
of the Joint Political Congress formally met for the last time and resolved to wind up the
organization. It called upon all its members to join the Travancore State Congress.
